Smart Start Board Orientation

In an effort to revive the Smart Start Board Orientations that used to be held for the network, NCPC invited Local Partnerships that have had a new board chair start in their role in the past 12 months to participate in an orientation session later this month. The Executive Directors and the Board Chairs were invited to attend the sessions, as well as asked to determine who else on their board might be interested and available to attend. Attendance at these sessions is completely optional. The local partnerships that have been invited to attend have received a calendar invite for the session; accepting or declining that invitation is your official RSVP for this session. If you have had a new board chair in the past 12 months and have not received information about these sessions please email Wren Davisson

  • West/Midwest Session: October 23, 2019 from 10:00am-1:00pm at Catabwa County Partnership for Children
  • East/Mideast Session: October 29, 2019 from 10:00am-1:00pm at Johnston County Partnership for Children.

The board orientation will review the importance of early childhood and how Smart Start works to improve the first five years of a child’s life, as well as the responsibilities of nonprofit boards and the unique characteristics of Smart Start boards. We hope to use the two sessions this fall as a way to gain information on how to implement regular board orientations for the network going forward.

Please make sure you keep NCPC updated on changes in your staff and board. This allows us to plan for, and connect with, board members and staff to offer these kinds of opportunities. This document tells you how to make sure NCPC has the correct information.

Smart Start Board Presentation: What’s Your Charge?

Local Partnerships have the opportunity to have NCPC staff to present to their boards of directors about the Smart Start Accountability Plan. This presentation overviews the Smart Start Network and then breaks down the components of the Accountability Plan to help your board better understand their roles and responsibilities as board member of a Smart Start agency. The content in this presentation is different, but complementary to the information that is going to be shared at the board orientations. If you want to get an idea of how the presentation helped other local partnerships boards, we have already presented to: Columbus, Lenior-Greene, Richmond, Martin-Pitt, Cleveland, Caldwell, Bladen, Chowan-Perquimans, Albemarle, Guilford, and Scotland. We plan to present to the following local partnerships between now and January, 2020: Randolph, Wayne, Watauga, Alleghany, Johnston, Forsyth, Alexander, Wilson, Henderson, and Anson. If you would like to have your board engage in this presentation, please reach out to your assigned program officer or Wren Davisson to get something scheduled.
