January is The Period of PURPLE Crying: Keeping NC Babies Safe Month

RALEIGH – Vivian Muzyk, Communications and Marketing Coordinator for The North Carolina Partnership for Children, Inc. (NCPC), the organization that leads Smart Start across the state, shares her experiences as a new mother, dealing with anxiety of infant crying, in a blog post for Carolina Parent.com. In the article, Muzyk, mother of an 11-month-old baby boy, explains how a presentation about the Period of PURPLE crying helped her cope during the first few months of parenthood.

The Period of PURPLE Crying is a program aimed at reducing Shaken Baby Syndrome by explaining baby crying patterns and healthy ways for parents to react to the crying. Research shows that frustration with crying is a leading cause of baby shaking. The program is a universal prevention program and will be provided to approximately 125,000 families of new babies born in North Carolina over the course of a five-year period. Governor Perdue declared January the “Period of PURPLE Crying Month” in North Carolina, to raise awareness about this important program.

In her blog, Muzyk shares how she used the program’s tips to cope with crying. To learn more, visit the Parenting Well When Emotions Run High section on the Period of Purple Crying website. To view the blog post visit, Carolina Parent Blogs.
