North Carolina’s Resilience Collaboratives and Coalitions

Throughout North Carolina, there are more than 40 county/community-based collaboratives or coalitions coming together across sectors to address ACEs, trauma, and resilience. Some coalitions are well established and have regular convenings, leadership structures, and the support of a backbone agency. Other coalitions are just forming and continuing to grow awareness of the science of ACEs, trauma, and resilience.

These coalitions are working collaboratively with numerous community partners in ways that align closely with the proposed framework’s strategies:

  • influencing perspectives, raising awareness about adversity, trauma, and resilience;
  • shifting power dynamics related to decision- making and leadership; fostering collaboration, coordination among agencies and residents;
  • implementing & improving practice and program components to be trauma and asset-informed; advocating for changes to policies and regulations that address adversity and promote resilience;
  • and increasing financial and community investments to support resilience-related efforts.

Many community collaboratives and coalitions have been working on addressing ACEs, trauma, and resilience for more than five years and prior to the emergence of a statewide structure, and these coalitions continue to leverage community power and local expertise as they explore what it means to create healthy and resilient communities for all.
