About Smart Start

Smart Start's Vision

Each child reaches their potential and is prepared for school and life success in North Carolina and a global community.

Smart Start's Mission

Advance a high quality, comprehensive, accountable early childhood system that benefits each child in North Carolina beginning with a healthy birth

Experiences during early childhood literally shape the structure of the brain. Because today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders, parents and workers, everyone has a stake in making sure that all children have the experiences they need to thrive. Smart Start brings together all the people involved in a young child’s life—families, teachers, doctors, caregivers, social workers, and many others—to ensure every child has all they need for healthy growth and development.

What is Smart Start?

Smart Start was created in 1993 as an innovative solution to a problem: Children were coming to school unprepared to learn.

Smart Start began in 1993 and is a key part of North Carolina’s early childhood system. We work in all 100 counties through 75 nonprofit Local Partnerships, partnering with families to help children grow and thrive. We focus on early care and education, family support, literacy, and the health and development of children ages 0–5.

Why Smart Start Matters

The first years of a child’s life—birth to kindergarten—shape their future. Early experiences influence school readiness, lifelong health, and the skills children need to succeed in life. Yet many children in North Carolina face barriers, from high child care costs to limited access to health services. Smart Start helps families overcome these challenges by connecting them to programs, resources, and support they need to thrive.

Meeting Families Where They Are

Smart Start is here for families every step of the way. We work across the whole state but let each community decide what works best for them. Our Local Partnerships bring together parents, teachers, doctors, faith leaders, and community helpers to give kids the best start in life. From the day your baby is born to their very first day of kindergarten, Smart Start is here to support you and your child.
